Oh Crud

December 31st, 2009 Dwyer No comments

I had planned a reflection piece for this day but spent most of my day before heading to work at the doctor’s office.  Came down with the “crud” last night and wanted to nip it in the bud since I’m working the next few days.

I will have the piece for you later today.

Please have a safe evening.

Wednesday AM Ramblings

December 30th, 2009 Dwyer 2 comments

My day started early, speaking to the Hendersonville Rotary Club.  What a fun group!  We had many laughs and I met some really good people.

I spent the drive home talking to my best friend, who lives in Indianapolis.  Jeff is a life long Colts fan and season-ticket holder.  He’s not a happy camper, incensed at the team pulling its starters in the loss to the Jets.  The place was packed to the rafters with fans wanting to witness history of closing out the home portion of the regular season unbeaten and extending the NFL regular season winning streak to 24 games.  He feels like a jilted lover.  Click here for a good read on it.

The final “Titans On 2 With Jeff Fisher” show took place last night.  I’m always humbled by the amount of people that come and watch the show.  It’s been a crazy year with the 0-6 start, then fighting to 7-7.  After Friday’s loss, people around Coach Fisher said they can’t remember him being so mad.  Not deflated or bummed but outright  angry at the way his team, especially his defense, played.  I didn’t know quite what to expect last night.  He was in a much better mood and while he didn’t say it, I think somewhat resigned to the fact that this simply wasn’t their year.  I also think he’s relishing in the fact that Chris Johnson could have a huge game and set a number of records Sunday in Seattle.

I’ll be working the rest of the weekend, including New Year’s Eve.  That’s fine with me.  Dad has always called it ”amateur night” and the older I get, the more I agree with him.

My late night reading includes several news magazines (okay, Sports Illustrated is in the stack too) and found this article interesting.  “Out of sight, out of mind” may be fitting of the Secretary of State of the United States but I have much more of an appreciation for the delicacy of the job.  It is certainly more grueling physically than the President’s gig and may also be a tougher one.  See what you think.

What is the appropriate gift for the mailman, trash collectors and newspaper person?  (Forget newspaper person.  He/she seems to think its some sort of game to chuck it under one of the bushes every morning.  Not amused).  I haven’t lived in a house for a few years and this was the first Christmas here for Lynley and me.  I’ll tell you what we did after I get some feedback.

Off to the downtown Y, then to work.

Fisher TV

December 28th, 2009 Dwyer No comments

Tomorrow night’s “Titans On 2 With Jeff Fisher” is going to be more of a season recap than a recap of Friday night’s loss to the Chargers.  (Unless you WANT to relive the ugliness of a 42-17 defeat).  Safety Chris Hope is our player guest.  Last one of the season.

Bob Mueller is off this week (well deserved) so I’ll be doing all the shows.

Allow me to get through the next couple of days and I’ll shout back at you Wednesday.

Christmas Memories

December 25th, 2009 Dwyer 3 comments

Merry Christmas!

Among my favorite Christmas morning memories many moons ago…

Leaving out cookie and eggnog for Santa and then waking up Christmas morning in amazement when there was a bite out of the cookie and half the eggnog gone.

Who needs video games?

Who needs video games?

Unwrapping G.I. Joe dolls complete with the jeep with the working search light on the back.

Lite-Brite.  Remember Lite-Brite?

Clothes from Aunt Dot.  Again.  (Love you Aunt Dot!)

One of our first dates...

One of our first dates...

But the best Christmas of all, is this year because my wonderful fiance is in my life and we’re getting married in a few months.  Everyday is Christmas to me.  (No, I’m not in the doghouse.  Can’t a guy just turn soft every once in awhile?)

Any Christmas moments you would like to share?

Have a great and safe weekend.

Dwyer Double-Take

December 24th, 2009 Dwyer No comments

Lynley is under the weather which means we will be spending some of the morning at a “Doc-in-the-Box.”
Also, some last minute Christmas shopping to do so… I like having something of substance in this blog everyday but I will occasionally throw in a “Best of” (relatively speaking, of course) since the response I’m getting is that a lot of people are just now find it. For the sake of trying to be original, let’s call entries like these a “Dwyer Double-Take”.  (That way, no pressure on the “Best” part in case the entry falls like an anvil out of the sky).  I’ve had a wonderful year of making lifetime memories.  Here’s one of them.  Merry Christmas Eve!

Meeting Mellencamp

August 19th, 2009

Today’s entry is something I wrote a few months ago, hoping that I would be able to revive DwyerWire and one day go public with it.  Today is as good as any.  After you read it, hope you can share any “brushes with greatness.”

My road trip to Bloomington

It’s not good to meet your heroes, we’re told.  They will disappoint you .

Met John Mellencamp the other day.  I’m an even bigger fan.

Silly, but I always believed our paths would cross.  A local TV “head” always seems to “know somebody” that can get them tickets to a sold-out show or a chance meeting with a big-name star that passes through the area.  I’ve had a few “near misses” with Mellencamp but the years were adding up and it still hadn’t happened.

Until my friend Timmy called.

Timmy and I worked together for several years in a past TV life.  He now works for a Country Music TV Channel and his assignment was to road trip to Bloomington to interview Mellencamp and Karen Fairchild.  Karen is with the rising country group “Little Big Town”.  They sang a duet on the song “A Ride Back Home” from his “Life Death Love and Freedom” CD.

The video shoot took place at Beck Chapel in the heart of the Indiana University campus.  It’s a quaint place that couldn’t hold more than 50 people.  Tim’s assignment, (along with his newly appointed “associate producer”) was to monitor a freelance crew videotaping the making of the video and then sit Karen and John down for a few questions.

It’s important to state right here that the “Forrest Gump” line about a box of chocolates is appropriate;
“You never know watcha gonna get.”   Big stars can be more fickle than a chameleon walking by a stained glass window.

What I got was one of the most memorable afternoons of my life.

I was doing my job very well of simply watching the shooting of the video and staying invisible until a woman approached me, stuck out her hand and said,

“Hi, I’m Elaine.”  I replied, “Hi, I’m John Dwyer with the Country Music TV Channel.”

Actually, I only said that in my head multiple times on the 5-hour ride home.  What I really said was,
“Uh, Hiya… I’m uh, John… here with my friend… I mean the guy over there.”

I’m sure Elaine Irwin-Mellencamp has met plenty of guys that thought they had “game” and choked but it’s probably been awhile since a guy dribbled the ball of his foot as clumsily as I did.  I picture her turning her back and smirking with a “yeah, I still got it” grin every time I replay my response.

A watched John and Karen “lip sync” the song no less than 20 times.  After a half-dozen takes, the camera and lights would be reconfigured for another angle.  During the breaks, Karen would grab her sweater and a bottled water or coffee and flirt with her super cool husband Jimi Westbrook (also a member of “Little Big Town”).  John would walk outside for a smoke, an assistant always making sure he had his shades.  Mellencamp’s custom three-piece black tuxedo with an ecru big-collared buttoned-down shirt looked crisp.  Not once did he raise his voice or cop an attitude.  (Although he did jokingly flip Karen “the finger” while she was goofing around with a digital camera and I’ll be damned if it wasn’t eerily similar to the infamous Johnny Cash picture taken some 50-years ago).

John’s longtime friends, who just happen to be members of his band; Mike Wanchic, Dane Clark and John Gunnell, would gather in the back of the chapel between filming sessions and shoot the breeze,  I would bounce in and out of the chit-chat but couldn’t help but to gravitate toward Mike.  He was the first person in the chapel when Tim and I walked in and he greeted us with genuine openness.  Of course, it could have been that he was just looking for a distraction since his wife was in labor.  I blew my invisible cover when I asked him a few questions about how he and John met.  Turns out they go back 31-years.  So many great short stories he rattled off… for another time.

The shoot finally wrapped up.  Indianapolis media grabbed John and Karen throughout the filming breaks.  John’s manager, Randy Hoffman, kept assuring us that we would get time with them.  Randy is a real pro and treated us as if we were much more important than what we were.  He told us to move from the chapel to a conference room in the building next door for the interview.

Once the camera and lighting were set up, I was given my responsibility.  I held a mini-camera about three-feet from John and Karen to give editors another option when splicing the feature together.  Timmy sat down and immediately put Karen and John at ease with relevant, thoughtful questions.  Among Timmy’s strengths; he knows music and he doesn’t give a rats about being a star or coming off like a know it all.  He just wants the finished product to be good.

So I sat there with this camera perched between my knees and I’m listened to Karen and John explain how the union was born, but it’s clear early on that John is in a reflective mood.  Timmy peppered him with questions about being a mentor and when he thought “he made it” and John opens up about specific songs and time frames in his life that a Mellencamp fan would find fascinating.  I soaked it all in and before I knew it, 25-minutes had gone by.

Right after Mellencamp stood up and took his microphone off, I reached out my hand to say thanks.  He gave me a firm hand shake while his other arm gave me a hard tap on the shoulder.  A “guy’s guy” kind of gesture.  He walked over to one of the walls that was covered with stenciled portraits of, I suspect, Indiana University donors.  He stared at them and said, “These are really impressive.”  Hoping to somehow engage in small talk,  I stood next to him and asked what he specifically admired about them.  He said the lines were so distinctive that they almost had to be traced and went off on a brief tangent about how great painters such as Renoir were masters at this.  He said matter of factly, “You know I paint some.”  I  said, “Yeah, I knew that” (and about 5-million other things about you).  I thanked him again he walked out of the room.

Thousands of pictures, hours of videotape and film were taken that day.  Not one contains a picture of him and me.  I just couldn’t bring myself to raise my cellphone camera or the small digital in my coat pocket.  I didn’t want to be “that guy” that has special access and steps over a line (just like I’ve never asked a Titan for a picture or an autograph while on assignment).

So no evidence that I was at the video shoot that day.  I’m okay with that.  Just know when you see the video on country music TV in a few months, there’s a lifelong Mellencamp fan that was there that day; invisible but gathering indelible memories.

Thanks Timmy.

Christmas Lights

December 23rd, 2009 Dwyer 4 comments

Welcome to Romy’s Cafe.  Can’t miss it.  It has a new neon sign.

Just off the University of Notre Dame campus is a new mixed-use development which includes a bookstore. Inside the bookstore is a coffee shop. During Lynley’s and my trip home to South Bend during the USC-ND weekend, we stopped by the joint. It’s named after my grandfather, Romy Hammes who donated the money to have the original bookstore built on campus in the mid-50’s. (This is where I explain that my full name is John Dwyer Hammes.  Dwyer is my mother’s maiden name. When I moved to Nashville in ‘96 I asked my parents if it was okay to go by Dwyer simply because it rolled off the tongue a bit easier. Hammes is often pronounced Hams, or Haymees. It’s Ham-mes.) While Romy didn’t finish the 8th grade, he did okay for himself I guess. Through the decades my parents have stayed close to the Notre Dame family and both bookstores retain the Hammes name, along with a number of other places around campus. And to think my Dad flunked out of the place! (He’s considered part of the class of ‘53 with some guy named Regis Philbin). Dad actually came down with mononucleosis, fell behind in his studies, and deciding to follow his father as a car peddler.  Actually, before that he spent some time in the Army, “guarding Lake Michigan.”  I guess he did okay for himself and family as well.

I digress. While at Romy’s Cafe in the fall, the folks there explained they were hoping to order a neon sign for the window. The front of the building faces a high traffic area and a neon sign was a perfect way to make the place a “beacon” of the development.

It stuck with me.   About two weeks ago, my mind thrashing around trying to think of something for Mom and Dad for Christmas, you could say a ”light went on.”  A neon light.  I contacted the people in charge and asked if Dorene’s and Jerry’s kids could pay for the sign and dedicate it to Romy’s daughter-in-law and son.   Little did I know that the sign was not just some off-the-cuff decorating dream but was already special-ordered and expected to arrive in a few days.  How often does that happen?  I thought this was going to be a months-long project with many hoops to jump through.  The stars aligned.  I made a round of calls to my siblings for the thumbs up.  If we were keeping score for the Hammes children coming up with birthday/Christmas gifts for our parents, I’m still in 4th place.  Anyway, all the people involved with the bookstore could not have been more cooperative and accommodating.  Special hats off to Jim O’Connor, the Regional Manager of the Follett Higher Education Group.  A real pro.

My two sisters and younger brother all made incredible efforts to be at the dedication yesterday morning.  I was knee deep in Coach Fisher’s TV show but they put me on speaker phone so I could hear the comments from the short ceremony. It went off nearly without a hitch. Dad had an idea but Mom was totally surprised by the event. My parents were lucky enough to be invited to Fr. Ted’s office for Mass afterwards. He married them 55-years ago. Another story for another time.

So Merry Christmas Mom and Dad. The “give/take” scale is still and will always be out of wack.  Your kids just hope  that when you head to campus, you’ll drive by “your sign” and smile.  After all you have put plenty of smiles on your kids faces.

Fisher Update

December 21st, 2009 Dwyer No comments

Well I’ll be darned.
Coach Fisher said earlier this season that, “We’ve made our mess. Now we have to clean it up.”

From 0-6 to 7-7.

When Keith Bulluck was injured I had an uneasy feeling about the 4th quarter, and my hunch was right.

We will ask all the questions you want answered (yes, not burning timeouts at regulation will be asked).

Player guest tomorrow night is Steven Tulloch.

Gotta go and put the show together.

Back at ‘cha Wednesday.

Justin “Bruised” (Not Really)

December 18th, 2009 Dwyer 3 comments

I’ve always been a big fan of News 2 Meteorologist Justin Bruce and I’m even a bigger one now. He’s funny, laid-back, hard-working and on the air nearly unflappable. Make that unflappable.

Justin and photographer Michael Dennis had one of those once in a blue moon “TV moments” during a live shot at Opryland. Among the most common comments when people watch it is, “WWWOOOOOAAAHHHH!!!!” (followed by cringing face).

Justin is a real pro and while I’m sure he doesn’t want this to be a defining TV moment in his life, occasionally things like this happen in our line of work. His reaction tells me that he’s ready for anything that life “slides” into him.

Check out the video here and let me know what you think.

Caution: I believe the link above should work and is the correct one. If not, you’ll watch his taped report and say, “Did I miss something?” I have our crack staff (Okay, it’s Heather) at WKRN efforting to make sure it’s the correct link.

Last minute Christmas shopping… Lynley’s best friend is in town… trying, trying to be better about working out on weekends… chart the Titans game… kind of a casual weekend planned, which is fine with me.

Have a great and safe weekend.

Back to my weekend…

Joe, Kim and Me enjoying the 47-7 butt whoopin' of the Rams

Joe, Kim and Me enjoying the 47-7 butt whoopin' of the Rams

Lynley and I  took in our first Titans game of the season, thanks to our good friends Kim and Joe King.  I’ve known Joe for years as he’s been kind enough to have me on his radio show to talk about the Titans and help promote “Titans On 2 With Jeff Fisher.”  Unless you live next door him or attend his church, you would know him as Joe Elvis, the afternoon DJ on 105.9 The Rock.  We joke that it’s amazing that we’re a pair of 40-something’s making a living reading and spinning records.  Is this a great country or what?!  Kim is a real doll, a great mother of two who works in her boy’s library.  She spent some of her younger years in Ft. Myers, Florida when I was a sportscaster there.  During a trip out to dinner one time, she brought an old community program that had a publicity shot of me in it.  Mullets are out, right?

Anyway, it started with a tasty tailgate (They are pros!), the game and then some pizza at one of our favorite East Nashville stops, Pizza Real.

Click here for Joe’s station link about our day.

Me, old and tired. Lynley, like she just walked out of Neiman Marcus fashion show.

When I go to games, I usually bring a notebook and chart every play.  Kinda geeky I know so I opted to just re-watch the game Monday morning.  I was great just being a fan (I wanted to yell at the coach, but with a 47-7 game, what do you say? “Yeah coach!… What were thinking running Chris Johnson in the middle of the line for…. er… 7-yards!  That’s a terrible call!) and hanging out with the Lynley, Kim and Joe.
